Dr. Eve Syrkin Wurtele is a professor of Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology at Iowa State and is an internationally recognized scholar. The main areas that Dr. Wurtele focuses her studies in are plant biochemistry, metabolic networks, and bioinformatics.
She was born in 1951 in Santa Monica, California where she spent most of her childhood with her parents and younger brother. In 1971 she earned her Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from University of California, Santa Cruz, and then in 1980 she received her PhD in Biology from UCLA. Wurtele began working for Iowa State University as an assistant professor of Botany in 1990, and continued her role until 1995 when she took a job as an Associate Professor of Botany in 1995 which she held until 1998 when she was given an opportunity to work as a professor of Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology where she continues to work to this day.
While working at Iowa State University, Dr. Wurtele organized the first Plant Science Institute symposia series in 1999. In 2012 she was awarded the Pioneer Dupont Award for Iowa Woman of Research Innovation and Leadership. Dr. Wurtele also directs the Plant/Eukaryotic and Microbial Systems Resource.
While working with other colleagues, Dr. Wurtele was the director of a Meta!Blast game, a computer game that is designed to teach players about the cellular makeup of plants. Meta!Blast has won and been nominated for several awards to date.
