Alumnus Wayne Moore served both the University and the Ames community in many capacities for over 60 years, including oversight in the establishment of CyRide, the city-wide Ames bus system.
Wayne Robert Moore was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa to Scott and Belle Moore. Moore received a BS in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State College in 1942, and joined the U.S. military serving in World War II and the Korean War.
After the military service, Moore returned to Iowa State University, where he served both the University and the Ames community in many capacities for over 60 years. Moore held the position of Vice President for Business and Finance at Iowa State University and finally served as Vice President for Planning and Development.
In 1961, Moore was a University Cost Analyst at Iowa State and became a member of the Board of Regents. In 1964, he became the Assistant Vice President for Business and Finance and in 1966, he became Vice President for Business and Finance. In 1974 he became the head of ISU’s financial administration and in 1984, he became Vice President for planning and development. Moore retired in 1989.
Moore was an integral part in establishing Cy-Ride and was a pioneer linking ISU with the business community, through projects such as the Center for Industrial Research and Service, the Iowa State Innovation System, the university’s business incubator, and the ISU Research Park. The Wayne Moore Technology Transfer Center was established at the ISU Research Park to honor Moore in 1989.
Moore was a member of the Operations Research Society of America, the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Institute of Management Sciences, and the National Association of College and University Business office. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, Pi Mu Epsilon, Alpha Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Phi, Scabbard and Blade, and Knights of St. Patrick. He was a member of the Achievement Foundation Board of Directors, Memorial Union Board, Academic Deans & Vice Presidents, Gateway Center Limited Partners, ISU Achievement Fund Board of Trustees, ISU Research Foundation, and was an ISU Foundation Governor.
In 1978, Moore served as chairman of the Council for Business Affairs and National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. In 1985 he served as President of Ames Chamber of Commerce and received the Memorial Union Service Medallion that same year. In 1989, he received the Ames Broadcasting Outstanding Community Service Award from the Ames Chamber of Commerce. In 1991, he served as council member and co-chair of the Community Development Council and served on the board of directors for VisionAire Corporation.
Moore was involved with the Ames Economic Development Commission, the Ames Seed Capital Fund Inc., United Way, Octagon Center for the Arts, and the Episcopal Church. He was an active supporter and University Museums’ Curators Associates at Iowa State University.
Moore married Catherine Mary Hansuld on June 25, 1955, in Ontario, Canada. The two were married until Mary's death in 1998. Wayne and Mary Moore had three children, Ginevera, Michael, and Donna.
Moore passed away in January 2012 and is interred in the Iowa State University Cemetery. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Mary, brother Keith Moore, and his parents Scott and Belle Moore.
